Cait Conley Secures Democratic Nomination in NY-17, Challenging Incumbent Mike Lawler
Democrat Cait Conley, a former national cybersecurity official and U.S. Army veteran, secured the Democratic nomination and will challenge Republican Representative Mike Lawler in New York's competitive 17th Congressional District. The district covers New York City's northern suburbs, and the race is expected to be one of the most closely watched in the country. Conley's platform focuses on lowering housing costs, expanding affordable healthcare, and increasing access to childcare, framing the contest as a fight for working families.
The race for New York's 17th Congressional District has officially taken shape as Democrat Cait Conley won her party's primary, setting up a high-stakes general election battle against Republican incumbent Mike Lawler. According to a CBS News report, Conley, a former national cybersecurity expert and director of counterterrorism on the National Security Council, easily defeated Rockland County legislator Beth Davidson and three other challengers in the primary held on Tuesday.

Conley celebrated her victory with supporters, many of whom she had only recently met. She grew up in the Hudson Valley and is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. After serving six overseas deployments in the U.S. Army and living outside Washington D.C., she was recruited by Democrats to challenge Lawler. She moved to the 17th District in 2025.
In her victory speech, Conley framed the campaign as "a mission we begin together and will finish together," adding that it was "a fight for our families, for our communities, and for our country." Her campaign promises include lowering housing costs, increasing affordable childcare, and expanding affordable healthcare. She sharply criticized Lawler, calling him "the king of special interests" and accusing him of prioritizing Donald Trump over his constituents.
The 17th Congressional District encompasses many of New York City's northern suburbs, including all of Rockland and Putnam counties and parts of Westchester and Dutchess counties. It is a complicated swing district with far more registered Democrats than Republicans, but Lawler has held the seat since 2023. The RNC responded to Conley's win, with Chairman Joe Gruters labeling her a "carpetbagger" and criticizing her role in the Biden administration's Afghanistan withdrawal.
President Trump endorsed Lawler in May during a visit to Rockland County, which he won in the 2024 election. The general election contest between Conley and Lawler is expected to be one of the most closely watched in the country, with Democrats eager to flip a seat in a district favorable to their party.
