2026 Belmont Stakes Odds & Analysis: Can Golden Tempo Repeat His Kentucky Derby Magic?

An in-depth analysis of the 2026 Belmont Stakes at Saratoga, focusing on Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo, favorite Renegade, and other contenders in a wide-open field. Expert oddsmaker insights and betting angles provided.

The 2026 Belmont Stakes, the final jewel of the Triple Crown, takes center stage this Saturday at Saratoga Race Course. With no Triple Crown on the line, the race has attracted a compact but competitive nine-horse field, led by Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo and runner-up Renegade. As the sport turns its attention to the 1¼-mile test, oddsmaker Johnny Avello of DraftKings provides insights into the key contenders and betting strategies for the 158th running. The race, broadcast on FOX, promises a fascinating clash of styles and narratives.

Golden Tempo stunned the racing world on May 2nd, rallying from last to first at 23/1 odds in the Kentucky Derby. Jockey Jose Ortiz piloted the Cherie DeVaux trainee to a narrow victory over his brother Irad Ortiz Jr. and Renegade. The victory was a testament to patience and a perfect trip in a massive 19-horse field. However, Golden Tempo skipped the Preakness Stakes, meaning the Triple Crown dream ended for the eighth consecutive year. Now, five weeks later, he returns in a much smaller field, drawing the ninth post. Avello is wary of the Derby winner's chances. "Golden Tempo is a good horse who probably had a nice setup in the Derby," Avello told FOX Sports. "The numbers from the race came in slow. But from what I’ve seen so far, I’m not sure that Golden Tempo is the right horse for this race." He believes the smaller field reduces potential trouble, which may not favor a deep-closing style. "This race has fewer horses and less potential for trouble. I think a different horse will win the Belmont."

The likely favorite is Renegade, who also skipped the Preakness. As of Thursday afternoon, he was the 2/1 morning line favorite from post four. His runner-up finish in the Derby, coupled with a fresher body, makes him a logical contender. "Renegade is gonna be the favorite at post time," Avello stated. He is closely matched with Chief Wallabee, the 3/1 second choice in the morning line from post three. Chief Wallabee finished fourth in the Derby and has a consistent record of first, second, and third prior to that. "Chief Wallabee and Renegade are pretty close. I could see Renegade taking the most money of any horse. But I kind of like Chief Wallabee a little," Avello added. Both horses have the tactical speed to be involved from the start, a crucial attribute in a shorter field.

Other notable contenders include Commandment, who won four straight races before the Derby, and Emerging Market, whom Avello identifies as a potential "wiseguy bet." Both are listed at 6/1 on the morning line. For those seeking a longer shot with real upset potential, Avello points to Growth Equity at 12/1. "Growth Equity has won his last two races," Avello noted. "This race is a little farther than he’s run before. But if he breaks well, there’s a chance he could steal this race. If any long shot has a chance to surprise, I think he’d be the one." With a compact field and multiple horses with tactical speed, the 2026 Belmont Stakes is a handicapper's delight, offering both value and uncertainty. The race is set for a 7:04 p.m. ET post time.

Ultimately, the 2026 Belmont Stakes presents a puzzle: can Golden Tempo prove his Derby was no fluke, or will the class and consistency of Renegade or Chief Wallabee prevail? The answer will unfold on the Saratoga dirt, with implications for the remainder of the 3-year-old season.
