Iran Warns Israeli Occupation in Lebanon Would Breach US Deal

Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that any continued Israeli occupation in Lebanon would violate a Memorandum of Understanding between Tehran and Washington, set to be signed on June 19, 2026. The diplomatic warning, issued after the end of hostilities between Iran and the US, underscores Tehran's position on regional territorial integrity and its adherence to the terms of the bilateral agreement. The statement signals Iran's intent to hold the US accountable for ensuring Israeli compliance under the deal.

Iran has issued a formal diplomatic warning, stating that any continued Israeli military presence in Lebanon would constitute a direct breach of the forthcoming Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Tehran and Washington. The statement, delivered by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, comes as the two nations prepare to sign the bilateral agreement in person on Friday, June 19, 2026.

According to Araghchi, the war with the United States is now concluded, and the focus has shifted to ensuring stability and adherence to the terms of the MoU. He emphasized that the agreement explicitly requires the full respect of Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity. "Any continued Israeli occupation in Lebanon would be a clear violation of the agreement we have reached with the United States," Araghchi stated, as reported by Al Jazeera.

The warning highlights the interconnected nature of recent regional diplomacy, where a ceasefire with Iran is tied to broader territorial issues involving other state actors. While the specific terms of the MoU have not been publicly disclosed in full, the Iranian position makes clear that the agreement carries significant implications beyond direct US-Iran relations. By linking Israeli military activities in Lebanon to the bilateral deal, Tehran is effectively placing the onus on Washington to ensure that its allies, particularly Israel, comply with the agreement's spirit and letter. The coming days will be critical in determining whether the MoU can hold amid these competing strategic interests in the Levant.
