China-Laos Railway Surpasses 80 Million Tonnes in Cargo Transport

The China-Laos Railway, a key infrastructure project under the Belt and Road Initiative, has achieved a significant milestone by transporting over 80 million tonnes of cargo since its launch in December 2021. This cross-border railway has dramatically expanded its operations, with daily freight services increasing from two to a peak of 23 trains. The route now connects 19 countries and regions, facilitating the movement of over 3,800 types of goods and fueling regional economic growth across Southeast Asia.

The China-Laos Railway has become a cornerstone of regional connectivity and economic integration in Southeast Asia, recently surpassing a major logistical milestone. According to reports from CGTN, the railway's cumulative cargo volume has now exceeded 80 million tonnes, including more than 18 million tonnes of cross-border shipments. This achievement underscores the project's rapid growth and its vital role in facilitating trade between China and the ASEAN region.

Operational Growth and Expansion

Since its inauguration on December 3, 2021, the railway's operational capacity has seen exponential growth. China Railway Kunming Group Co., Ltd. reported that daily cross-border freight services have surged from an initial two trains to a current peak of 23. As of late March 2026, a total of 71,000 freight trains have operated on this vital corridor. The railway spans over 1,000 kilometers, linking Kunming in southwest China's Yunnan Province directly to Vientiane, the capital of Laos.

Diversification of Goods and Economic Impact

The types of goods transported have diversified remarkably, evolving from just over 10 initial items like fertilizers and rubber to encompass more than 3,800 different products. This expanded catalogue now includes chemicals, textiles, electrical products, and minerals. This diversification is a direct indicator of the railway's success in integrating supply chains and stimulating regional economic activity. Annual cargo volumes continue to rise steadily, with 5.64 million tonnes transported in the first part of 2026 alone.

Regional Connectivity and Reach

The railway's influence extends far beyond the China-Laos border. Its freight service network now reaches 19 countries and regions across Asia. Key destinations include Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, and Bangladesh. To date, over 20,000 international freight trains have been dispatched via this route, solidifying its position as a central artery for regional trade. This enhanced connectivity reduces transportation costs and time, making regional markets more accessible and competitive.

The milestone of 80 million tonnes is more than a statistic; it represents a tangible acceleration of commerce and cooperation in Southeast Asia.
