The security vulnerability was discovered by researchers Joseph Thacker and Joel Margolis after Thacker's neighbor mentioned she had preordered Bondu toys for her children. With just a few minutes of investigation, they found that Bondu's web portal—intended for parents to monitor conversations and for staff to oversee product performance—had virtually no authentication barriers. By simply logging in with any Google account, they gained immediate access to children's private conversations, pet names they had given their Bondu toys, personal preferences, favorite snacks, and dance moves.

According to their findings detailed in WIRED's reporting, the exposed data included comprehensive personal information: children's names, birth dates, family member names, parental objectives for their children, and detailed summaries and transcripts of every previous chat between the child and their Bondu toy. The researchers confirmed with Bondu that more than 50,000 chat transcripts were accessible through the exposed portal, representing essentially all conversations the toys had engaged in, except those manually deleted by parents or staff.

Company Response and Security Fixes

When alerted to the data exposure, Bondu reportedly took down the console within minutes and relaunched it the next day with proper authentication measures. In a statement to WIRED, Bondu CEO Fateen Anam Rafid stated that security fixes "were completed within hours, followed by a broader security review and the implementation of additional preventative measures for all users." The company claimed to have found no evidence of access beyond the researchers involved and noted that the researchers didn't download or keep copies of the sensitive data, only taking screenshots and a screen-recording video to confirm their findings.

However, the incident has drawn significant regulatory attention, with United States senator Maggie Hassan sending a letter to Anam Rafid describing the exposure as "devastating" and demanding detailed answers about the company's data gathering and protection practices.

The researchers argue that their discovery represents a larger warning about the dangers of AI-enabled chat toys for children. Their access to Bondu's backend revealed how detailed the information collected was, with the company maintaining histories of every chat to better inform the toy's future conversations with its owner. While Bondu didn't store audio recordings—auto-deleting them after a short time and keeping only written transcripts—the textual data alone contained highly sensitive personal information.

Margolis and Thacker highlight cascading privacy implications, noting that even with the console now secured, questions remain about how many company employees have access to collected data, how their access is monitored, and how well their credentials are protected. "All it takes is one employee to have a bad password, and then we're back to the same place we started, where it's all exposed to the public internet," Margolis warned. He added that this sensitive information about children's thoughts and feelings could enable horrific forms of child abuse or manipulation, calling it "a kidnapper's dream."

Third-Party AI Services and Development Practices

The researchers also discovered that Bondu appears to use Google's Gemini and OpenAI's GPT5, potentially sharing information about children's conversations with these third-party companies. Anam Rafid confirmed that the company uses "third-party enterprise AI services to generate responses and run certain safety checks, which involves securely transmitting relevant conversation content for processing," but claimed to take precautions to minimize what's sent and use contractual and technical controls.

Additionally, the researchers suspect that the unsecured console itself may have been "vibe-coded"—created with generative AI programming tools that often lead to security flaws. This raises concerns about whether AI toy companies might be more likely to use AI in developing their products, tools, and web infrastructure, potentially introducing additional vulnerabilities through automated coding practices.

Safety Versus Security in AI Toys

This incident highlights a critical distinction between AI safety and data security. While Bondu appears to have attempted to build safeguards into its AI chatbot—even offering a $500 bounty for reports of inappropriate responses—it simultaneously left all user data completely exposed. Thacker notes, "This is a perfect conflation of safety with security. Does 'AI safety' even matter when all the data is exposed?"

The experience has changed Thacker's perspective on AI-enabled toys for children. After considering giving similar products to his own children, seeing Bondu's data exposure firsthand made him reconsider: "Do I really want this in my house? No, I don't. It's kind of just a privacy nightmare." This personal reflection underscores the broader consumer trust issues that such security incidents create for the entire AI toy industry.
