Game Performance and Statistics

Sanders finished the game completing 4 of 16 passes for 47 yards with an interception and two sacks. He also contributed three carries for 16 yards on the ground. The Browns, who led by six points at halftime, ultimately lost the game 23-16 despite Sanders leading a late drive that reached Baltimore's 25-yard line.

The rookie quarterback was characteristically self-critical in his postgame assessment. "I don't think I played good," Sanders told reporters. "I don't think I played good at all. I think there's a lot of things we need to look at during the week and go and just get comfortable with even throwing routes with [wide receiver] Jerry [Jeudy] and throwing routes with all those guys."

Critical Fourth Quarter Drive

In the game's closing minutes, Sanders led the Browns to Baltimore's 25-yard line, giving Cleveland a chance to tie the game. However, the drive stalled when Sanders threw three straight incompletions, including a third-down pass to wide receiver Gage Larvadain in the end zone that was broken up by Ravens cornerback Chidobe Awuzie. The Browns subsequently turned the ball over on downs, allowing Baltimore to run out the clock.

Coaching Perspective and Future Outlook

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski expressed confidence in his rookie quarterback despite the challenging circumstances. "We trust all of our guys," Stefanski said. "We trust our guys to perform. [Sanders is] no different. And playing a backup quarterback role, as we've talked about over the years, that's tough to come in there. But we trust him. I know there's things that he's going to want to do better, but that's why we work."

The coaching staff now faces a quarterback decision for next week's game against the Las Vegas Raiders. Stefanski confirmed that if Gabriel clears concussion protocol, he will start. If Gabriel is not cleared, Sanders will make his first NFL start. Bailey Zappe, currently on the practice squad, remains the only other quarterback option on the roster.

Rookie Development Challenges

According to Stefanski, the second half marked Sanders' first time playing with the starting offense since he fell to the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft. Sanders began his professional career as Cleveland's fourth-string quarterback and spent training camp practicing primarily with second- and third-string players.

Despite being elevated to the backup role after the Browns traded veteran Joe Flacco to Cincinnati on October 7, Sanders had not been receiving first-team practice reps as the team focused on preparing Gabriel. "You're always trying to get your starter ready to play," Stefanski explained. "Certainly, when your starter's a rookie, those are very valuable reps. When your backup is a rookie also, you do everything in your power to get our quarterback as many reps as possible."

Team Support and Moving Forward

Defensive star Myles Garrett emphasized the team's collective responsibility following the game. "He spoke after the game, and he wanted to pin it on himself and his performance, but we're not going to allow him to do that," Garrett said of Sanders. "It's a team game, so we're all in this together."

Sanders, who had been viewed by some analysts as a potential first-round pick, notably fell in April's draft before Cleveland traded up to select him with the 144th overall pick. The son of Pro Football Hall of Famer and Colorado football coach Deion Sanders, the rookie now faces the possibility of his first NFL start depending on Gabriel's health status in the coming days.
